Roundtable discussion with Luxembourg's EU Ambassador Nicolas Mackel
On 8 October the third roundtable discussion concentrated on European competitiveness.
Inspired by Luxembourg’s Ambassador to the EU Nicolas Mackel’s initial thoughts, a discussion developed bringing together political, academic and business perspectives.
Of course, we didn’t identify the magic solution to elevate Europe’s competitiveness, but tried to identify ways and means.
Two main questions arose that are worth to be further developed.
What could be a better balance between less cumbersome EU legislation, Member States “gold plating” of EU legislation and still reflecting difference at national level?
How to do better, as legislation aims to address most flagrant aspects or big players, while burdening the backbone of our economy, namely 95% SMEs, should be avoided?
Our reflections require creative thinking while of course a strong political will is necessary at all stages.
